Longmeadow - Raymond “Ray” E. Suzor, Jr., 74, of Longmeadow, passed away at home on his 74th birthday, October 22, 2015. Born in Westfield, MA to the late Raymond Sr. and Helen Suzor, he was a 1959 graduate of West Springfield High School. Ray received his Bachelors from UMass Amherst and at the age of 21 he began a very long and dedicated teaching career that lasted for 53 years. Ray’s first few years of teaching Chemistry were spent at Agawam High School and then he went on to teach Chemistry  at Longmeadow High School for 35 years where he also coached the Longmeadow Ice Hockey Team and assisted with the Summer Enrichment courses. Most recently, Ray spent the past 15 years as a Chemistry Teacher with Somers High School in Connecticut where he remained up until the day he passed. Ray was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Longmeadow. He had a great love and dedication to teaching and his students meant the world to him. Throughout his life, Ray always remained very active and physically fit enjoying ice hockey, skiing, surfing, biking and maintaining his beautiful lawn and yard. While at UMass, Ray played Saxophone in the band with Taj Mahal and the Electras. He recently continued playing saxophone at various restaurants and clubs in the area.
His kindness to his colleagues, his many students over the years and to his dear family will never be forgotten. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen (Bowler) Suzor of Longmeadow; his seven children, Kristen Suzor of Connecticut, Brett Suzor of Feeding Hills, Betsi Harrington and her husband Tom of New Hampshire, William LeBlanc and his wife Kelli of Tennessee, John LeBlanc and Jesus Reyes of Ludlow, Robert LeBlanc of Ludlow and Patricia Carlson and her husband Darrell of Vermont; his brother, Robert Suzor of Springfield, his sister, Dee Noiseux of Massachusetts; his 12 grandchildren, Jack and Noah Harrington, Joe Suzor, William, Gregory, Alex and Catherine LeBlanc, Andrew Reyes, Jacob LeBlanc, Ben Carlson and his wife Alli, and Sam and Olivia Carlson; two great-grandchildren, Elle and Cameron  and a very dear lifelong friend, Richard “Dick” Murray. Family and friends are invited to meet for calling hours on Tuesday October 27th from 4-8PM at the Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, 220 North Main St., East Longmeadow. Ray’s funeral ceremony will be held on Wednesday October 28th starting at 8:30 AM at the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s Church, 519 Longmeadow St., Longmeadow. Burial will be in Longmeadow Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made me in Ray’s memory to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104-2396. www.forastiere.com
