Obituary

SPRINGFIELD - Violet R. Carney, 95, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, March 6, 2020. Her children, William and Kathleen were by her side. “Vi” was born in Springfield, MA to her late parents, Frank, Sr. and Bertha Forsyth on May 15, 1924. A lifelong resident of Springfield, MA, Vi graduated from Commerce High School. On January 22, 1945, she married the love of her life, the late Frederick J. Carney. She is survived by her two children, William Carney of Winter Springs, FL and Kathleen Carney of Enfield, CT also her son-in-law Stephen Allen; 5 granddaughters Jennifer Polonis, Brooke Smith, Kendra Carney, Brianne Alllen, Shawn Moore; her grandson-in-law David Moore and 6 great grandchildren Spencer Polonis, Hannah Smith and Kayla, Mackenzie, Cael and Aspen Moore. Violet is predeceased by her beloved husband, Frederick in 2010; her grandson Scott C. Allen; her brothers David, Frank, Jr., and Frederick and her daughter-in-law Cheryl Carney. Upon graduation, Violet was employed as a bookkeeper for Western Auto. She later worked for the American Heart Association, Forbes & Wallace and retired from Steiger’s. After retiring, Fred and she volunteered at St. Joseph’s Residence in Enfield, CT. Vi and Fred were active members of the East Longmeadow Morning Glory Walkers, the Golden Agers and various clubs. Violet loved music and began taking classes in Opera History at Springfield College. Vi was an avid reader. Growing up with parents that were deaf, Vi was proficient in American Sign Language and shared this skill with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Vi was a loving mother, wife and friend. Always there to share her love with her family and friends. Family and friends are invited to gather on Sunday, March 15, 2020 from 4-7 PM at Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, 220 North Main Street, East Longmeadow. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 16, 2020 beginning at 10:30 AM at the funeral home followed by prayer service at 11:30 AM in the funeral home. Committal services will be at 2 PM at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Main Street, Agawam.
