During his retirement, Val enjoyed many years in Florida where he spent his winters in the North Lauderdale area. While in Florida, he worked as a security and parking lot attendent for the Winterhaven Red Sox.  He enjoyed all professional sports, especially baseball and football.  He loved music, especially singing and dancing. His voice could be heard at many gatherings where he sang his favorite tunes to family and friends. He adored his dog Maggie who was his companion to the very end. He could be seen walking Maggie in his neighborhood or having her sit on his lap in his home.
