Obituary

Stefania (Stell) D. Smigelski, 101, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 18, 2022. Born in the Indian Orchard section of Springfield, December 1920, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Eleanora Kurzawa.
Stefania enjoyed many hobbies throughout her life, including gardening, cooking, and canning and freezing the abundance of vegetables from the garden. She was talented at baking and cake decorating, and made many of the family special occasion and wedding cakes.
She enjoyed watching all sports, and was a lifelong fan of the Red Sox and New England Patriots, sharing their many disappointments and celebrating their successes.
Stefania was a long time communicant of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Springfield, until its closing in 2018, becoming a communicant of St John the Evangelist Church in Agawam.
She is survived by her son, Anthony Smigelski, Jr., and wife Claudia of Shushan, NY; daughter, Patricia Sniegowski, and husband William of Belchertown, MA; Son in Law Christopher Savard, of Windsor, CT; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She also leaves two nephews; Godson, Richard Kosinski and wife Carol, and Thomas Bertera.
Stefania was predeceased by her beloved husband Anthony Smigelski, Sr. in 2020 at the age of 101, having celebrated 78 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Barbara J. Savard in 2013, as well as her five sibings: Cecelia Orlik, Joseph Kurzawa, Anna Bertera, Viola Kosinski, and Julian Kurzawa.
The past two years, Stefania was surrounded by her loving family and caregivers, enabling her to remain comfortably home. A special thank you to Fay and Susan who provided comforting care and friendship. The family is forever grateful to them for all their help.
Family and friends are invited to gather Friday, September 23, 2022 from 4-7PM at Colonial Forastiere Funeral Home, 985 Main St., Agawam, MA. A funeral service for Stefania will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022 beginning at 9AM from the funeral home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial, to be celebrated at 10AM, at St. John the Evangelist Church, Agawam. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Chicopee.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Agawam Ambulance Service, c/o Agawam Fire Department, 800 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001, or the Agawam Public Library, 750 Cooper St., Agawam, MA 01001 where donations will be used to enhance the gardening section.
