1937 – 2019


Feeding Hills – Richard “Dick” Peter Smus, 82, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died unexpectedly after a short illness on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at Mercy Medical Center. He was born in Springfield to the late John and Tekla (Goncarz) Smus on January 27, 1937. Dick graduated from Springfield Technical High School and went to work as an electronic technician for United Technologies Research Center in East Hartford for 41 years until his retirement in 1998. An active member of Sacred Heart Church and a devout Catholic he participated and was a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society, the Apostolate of the Suffering, St. Martha’s Guild, and was an Extraordinary Minister, Lector, and an Adult Altar Server. He was an avid bowler featured on channel 5 and 40 TV bowling shows for 38 times and was in the World Candlepin Bowling Hall of Fame. Most of all he adored his family and will be greatly missed for his good sense of humor and his wonderful smile. He leaves his loving wife of 55 years, Lois (Franklin) Smus; his son, Peter Smus and his wife Gina; and his daughter, Kristen Castonguay all of Feeding Hills; his grandchildren, Michele and her husband Michael, Matthew and his wife Silvana, Kirk and Shayne; his great-granddaughter, Arianna; his sisters, Mary Smus and Agnes Bogacz both of Springfield. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his 4 brothers, Joseph, Raymond, Stanley, and Fr. John Smus; and his 4 sisters, Anne Stanley, Evelyn Kaczynski, Statia Staszko, and Wanda Adamski. Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday, July 31st from 4-7PM at Colonial Forastiere Funeral and Cremation, 985 Main St., Agawam. Dick’s funeral will be held on Thursday, August 1st from the funeral home at 9AM followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial in Sacred Heart Church, Feeding Hills at 10AM.
