Obituary

Enfield CT – Michael James Scanlon, 39, passed away on Monday November 6, 2023 after a brief illness with his loving family by his side.
Mike grew up in East Longmeadow and graduated from East Longmeadow High school in 2002. He was proud to be a Spartan.
He received his Bachelor Degree from St. Michael’s College and Western New England University and his Masters in Education from American International College. He worked in the insurance field and at Peoples Bank in East Longmeadow. Every customer knew him and would ask for him by name. Some even waiting until he was available to help them. Michael found his true calling in education. Michael completed his student teaching practicum at Ludlow High School before becoming a Business Teacher at Minnechaug Regional High School. Mike was a beloved teacher by both faculty and students. He was a mentor and a leader to his students, always cheering them on in the classroom and in life. Michael helped organize a 5k for a student who was struggling with a terminal illness. He also planned, organized and implemented 3 trips to Disney World with his students to teach them about Business and Entrepreneurship. Mike lead a team of students in the Springfield’s Stock Market Challenge where they won first place.
Mike was a true champion for the human story. He understood that life can have hurdles, and he gave positivity to everyone he met. He would make and bring sandwiches to homeless people and would give hugs to any face that looked like they needed one. He was a supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and faced all hate with love. You could often hear Mike shout Love Louder as a way to proclaim love against all hate and discrimination towards minorities.
He loved music and driving his car on a backroad blasting his favorite song. He played the saxophone and guitar, and created a beautiful artistic presence with his music.
More than anything, Michael loved his family. He loved to cook dinners and bring them over to friends and family, especially a good Polish dinner complete with Pierogis, Kapusta and Kielbasa. Michael had a special bond with his mom, whom he loved to get ice cream with, go to the beach, and have cookouts. Michael enjoyed visiting his Dad in Florida. Michael and his sister Christine shared a close bond that was noticed by all. He was her big brother and protector. He absolutely loved his brother in law Al and was the proudest Uncle on the planet.
He will be deeply and sorely missed by his mother Elizabeth “Betty” (Bubien) Scanlon and her partner James Raymond, his father James Scanlon and his wife Kathleen Scanlon, his grandmother Helen Bubien, his sister Christine Callahan and her husband Al Callahan, his nephew Liam and niece Liliana.
