Matthew Joseph McGuinness

It is with great sadness that we share with you the passing of Matthew J. McGuinness of West Springfield. He passed on 3/17/2023 (St. Patrick’s Day) in Springfield, MA at the age of 85 surrounded by his loved ones.

He leaves behind two sons Michael and Mark McGuinness of West Springfield, his daughter Susan and her husband James Aubrey, two granddaughters Madison and Brianne Aubrey of Agawam, and several nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his wife, Joanne, parents Helen and James McGuinness, brothers John and Robert McGuinness, and sisters Claire Sterling and Ruth McGuinness.

Matthew proudly served in the United States Army prior to his lifelong career as a toolmaker. He was a parishioner of St. Thomas church, West Springfield, and an active member of the Knights of Columbus in West Springfield and the Polish-American Club of Agawam in Feeding Hills.  Known to his friends as “Matty,” he spent time with them playing hockey, baseball, golf, hunting and fly-fishing and was a devout New York Giants, Boston Red Sox, and Boston Bruins fan. He enjoyed spending time at the Quabbin Reservoir just taking in the picturesque scenery. He was a patriotic American and very proud of his Irish heritage. Matthew cherished his time with his family, especially during the holidays. Maddy and Bri’s number one cheer section was “Gramps.” Displaying his pride, rain or shine, he was at their sporting events, dance recitals, and special occasions. He will forever be remembered as a kind-hearted soul who made everyone smile.

Calling hours will be 11:00am-1:00pm with a funeral home service to follow on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at the Colonial Forastiere Funeral Home 985 Main St., Agawam. Interment with Military honors will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Agawam.
