Mary Alice Avato

Southwick – Mary Alice (Carter) Avato, 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 31, 2018. She was a long-time English teacher and language arts consultant, serving both the New York School System and Springfield Public Schools, where she retired in 1980. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 38 years, Cosmo J. Avato. A staunch advocate of education, she was a committed philanthropist, donating to several scholarship funds to support education for the disadvantaged, and she established a scholarship fund in the name of Cosmo J. Avato at Western State University. A graveside service will be held for Mary Alice on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 9am the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.
