East Longmeadow- Margaret M. McGowan, 91, of East Longmeadow died peacefully at CareOne Redstone on Sunday, May 1,2022. Margaret (“Peg”) was born in Westfield, Massachusetts to the late Cornelius J. and Margaret M. (Cleary) Baker. Peg graduated from the former Classical High school in Springfield in 1947. She was a secretary in the East Longmeadow School Department for 32 years, retiring in 1995. Peg was honored as a retired educator at her induction into the East Longmeadow School’s Hall of Fame in 2008. Peg and her husband Thomas (“Tom”) were married in 1953 at St. Michael's Cathedral in Springfield. Peg was a communicant of St. Michael's Parish in East Longmeadow where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. In retirement Peg attended Holyoke Community College and received an Associate in Arts degree and was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Society in 2004. In retirement Peg and her husband Tom enjoyed vacation travel throughout the United States as well as Europe and Japan. She loved NCIS and the Boston Red Sox. Peg was predeceased by her parents, a brother Neil, a son Michael, daughter Mary Catherine Bennett and a granddaughter Jessica.The family wishes to thank Peg’s daily caregivers as well as the CareOne Redstone staff for the care that they provided. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Thomas J., five children: Thomas B. McGowan and his wife Joan of Enfield, CT, Elizabeth T. Silva and her husband Daniel of Seekonk, MA, James C. McGowan of Enfield, CT, and his fiancé Dolores Brown, Margaret M. Gonzalez and her husband Martin of East Meadow, NY and Ann C. Kimball and her husband Jeffery of East Longmeadow. Eighteen grandchildren: James E. McGowan and his wife Amy, Erin Sanchez and her husband Eduardo, Joshua and his wife Kelsey, and Meredith McGowan, Allison Pringle and her husband Scott, Meagan L., Sarah E., Matthew T. and his wife Lauren, Colleen M and her fiance Sean, and Patrick M. Bennett; Thomas F. and Caroline M. Silva; James H.McGowan and his wife Carolyn, McKenzie A Kryla and her husband Konrad; Trinity A. and Gabriela A. Gonzalez; Grace M. and Rose M. Kimball. Twelve Great grandchildren: Marcus and Lisette Sanchez, Evelyn, Daphne and Clara McGowan, Timothy, Mary Catherine and Declan Pringle, Sophia and Liam McGowan, Hailey McGowan, and Emilia Kryla. Calling hours will take place from 4:00PM-7:00PM on Sunday (May 8,2022) at the Forastiere Smith Funeral & Cremation, 220 North Main St., East Longmeadow. Funeral services begin at 9:15AM on Monday (May 9,2022) from the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:30 AM in St. Michael’s Church, 128 Maple St., East Longmeadow. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, East Longmeadow.
