AGAWAM – Joseph F. Tousignant, 87, of Agawam, MA and Fort Meyers, FL and previously of Longmeadow, MA, passed away on June 9, 2020 at Baystate Medical Center. Born in Springfield, MA on January 17, 1933 to the late Joseph and Alma (Montplaisir) Tousignant, he attended Springfield Schools. He graduated from Springfield Technical High School and continued to Ward School of Electronics, now known as Hartford University in 1952, specializing in Radio and Television Repair. He also took classes at Western New England College and Westfield State, now known as Westfield University, where he received his Teaching Certificate for Vocational Education. Joe joined the Naval Reserves in 1953 and continued to take Teacher Education classes in Boston, the Great Lakes as well as San Diego, CA. During that time and for many years on, he taught Electrical and Electronic classes at the Reserve Center (formally on Cass St. in Springfield). He retired from the Naval Reserves in 1993 as a Chief Petty Officer Electronic Technician. Joe was a member of the IBEW, Local 7 as an electrician with a Journeyman and a Masters License in MA and a Journeyman License in CT. He taught Vocation Education for Local 7 apprentices at Roger L Putnam Vocational Technical School in the evening division for 15 years. For over 40 years, he was a member of the IBEW. Since 1980, Joe has been a Eucharistic Minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus #9960 in East Longmeadow, a 40 year Retreatant of Holy Family Retreat Center and a past Retreatant of Mother of Sorrows in West Springfield. To cherish his memory, he leaves his beloved wife of 64 years, Lorraine (Cocchi) Tousignant; his children Donna Slate of Chicopee, MA, Denise Tousignant of FL and David Tousignant and his significant other Sally Wilson of CA; his grandchildren Jennifer Hyatt and James Slate; his two great grandchild as well as several nieces and nephews in the surrounding area. Joseph was predeceased by his parents, and his siblings Roland and Rodger Tousignant and Irene Maynard. Joe and Lorraine spent many happy days square dancing, scuba diving (Joe was a member of Mass. Sea Lions), water skiing, and diving for lobsters off the coast of Gloucester, MA. They also enjoyed many summers at their cottage on Lake Norwich in Huntington, MA with friends and family get togethers. He also missed playing golf with his Local 7 guys. Family and friends are invited to gather on Saturday, June 20, 2020 from 10:30 AM – 12 Noon at Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, 220 North Main Street, East Longmeadow followed by a service at 12 Noon. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Tinkham Road, Springfield.
