John Makowiec

EAST LONGMEADOW – John Makowiec, 83, passed away on November 25, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Ludlow, MA, the son of the late Walter and Bertha Makowiec. He leaves his wife Rosalind (Gamelli) Makowiec; daughters Kim-Marie Cloonan and her husband Thomas of East Longmeadow and Shari-Ann Binney and her husband Michael of Maryland, NY; two grandchildren Ashley Rose Cloonan and Robert Cloonan; sisters Jean Wilson and Sophie Gazda as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sisters Helen Plasse, Clara Hamilton, Mary DelBuono, Celia Robert and brothers, Edwin and Edward Markowiec. John was a proud member of the U.S. Marines, serving in Korea. He was employed by Pratt and Whitney, UTC in East Hartford, CT. John was an ardent fan of the Red Sox and Boston Bruins. He was also a member of the East Longmeadow American Legion Post 293. The family would like to thank the nurses and aides at Wingate at East Longmeadow, especially Rockwell. Their care and friendship to us and John was so appreciated. Thanks also to Dr. Kirtani and all the nurses on the chemo floor at the Sister Caritas Cancer Center. Family and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 from 9-11 AM at Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, 220 North Main Street, East Longmeadow, MA with a service to follow at 11 AM. Burial with military honors will be at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
