James Sophinos

On Monday, May 31, 2021, James L. Sophinos of Longmeadow, MA loving father of one daughter, two sons, four grandchildren and two great grandsons passed away at the age of 90. He was predeceased by his wife Argiro (Lula) Sophinos of Iraklion, Crete, Greece. He leaves behind his sons Leonard Sophinos and his wife Alexandra of Somers, CT, and George Sophinos and his wife Karen of Rye Beach, NH and his daughter Elizabeth Papas and husband Kostas of West Palm Beach, FL.
He leaves behind his three grandsons James, Philip, Anthony, and granddaughter Argia. He was a great grandfather to George and Theodore.
James was born on March 22, 1931, in Springfield, MA to Louis and Vasilia Sophinos. Raised in Springfield he graduated from Springfield Technical High School.
His career included managing The Oaks restaurant and banquet hall in Springfield MA. Primarily, James worked as an offset pressman for 35 years mainly at Rexham Corporation of Westfield MA. Always staying active in retirement, James worked as an auto transporter for Balise Auto Group of Springfield.  He volunteered at the Longmeadow Senior Council of Aging, Red Cross Blood Drive and donated to various charities aiding the poor. He was a lifelong active communicant of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield where he served on the parish council, bingo committee and the annual Glendi festival.
He enjoyed gardening, traveling, and cooking. He will be remembered for his strong character, hard work, selfless giving, and love of family. A reflection period from 10am-11am and funeral service at 11am will be held at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church, 22 St. George Road Springfield MA on Friday, June 4th. For the health and safety of those joining the family for services, they kindly ask that a face covering be worn in the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saint George Greek Orthodox Church Endowment Fund.  A private burial service will be held at Oak Grove cemetery for family members immediately after the church services.
