Obituary

Southwick- Herbert C. Pace, Jr. died peacefully at Noble Hospital March 6, 2019, with his wife Shirley at the bedside. Born November 19, 1921 in Springfield, Massachusetts to Herbert and Dorothy (Springham) Pace, he was a Technical High school graduate, and earned his BA at American International College. He spent seven years in the Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Herb and his wife Shirley (Walters) married August 26, 1950 and had two children, Leslie and Jonathan. They have lived in Southwick, Massachusetts since 1958.
Herb’s first job teaching was in a one room schoolhouse in Tolland, Massachusetts. He was a teacher and principal in Colebrook, Connecticut as well, before moving to Southwick for the remainder of his career. He was a guidance counselor and middle school principal. He was a lifelong learner and used his GI Bill benefits to earn two masters degrees in education. During summers he worked at the West Hartford YMCA camp (Camp Jewell) as Trips Director. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, brother James, and sister Barbara. He is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Leslie Modena of Nashville, Tennessee, son Jonathan Pace (Michelle) of Lake Worth, Florida, a sister, Marjorie Baker, and brother, Ralph Pace. Herb had seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. The committal service is to be held at the Agawam Veterans’ Cemetery April 11, 2019 at 3 PM. Please donate in his name to Southwick Dollars for Scholars (PO Box 88, Southwick MA 01077) in lieu of flowers. Scholarships will be given to students pursuing a teaching career.
