Helaine Smelstor

Helaine Brinkmann Smelstor, 70, of Agawam, passed away unexpectedly at her beloved country home in Fergusonville, NY on Aug. 31, 2017. She was born in Bronxville, NY on July 16, 1947, to Marie and Charles Brinkmann, the first of four children.

Helaine lived in Pelham Manor, NY and Chicago, IL before moving to Longmeadow, where she graduated from high school. After attending Vermont College, she met, fell in love with, and married Joseph Smelstor; together, they raised their three children in Agawam in their home, of which she was so proud.

She was a Realtor and Realty Manager for 25 years in the Springfield area. Helaine was a beautiful woman, both in stature and spirit. Everything she did was immaculate: every space, pristine; every gift wrapped to perfection; every word written, beautiful. Her home was open to all and her love for her husband, children, grandchildren and all family was unconditional. She loved her craft room, where she could design and create. Helaine will be remembered for her big heart, her deep laugh, and her generous spirit. She will be missed by all.

Helaine was predeceased by her parents. She leaves behind her loving husband, Joe; children: Joe and wife Nicole; Dawn; Todd and wife Sarah; grandchildren: Jake, Grace, Ailah and a newborn on the way; siblings: Barbu, Charles and Nanck; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Visiting hours will be held at the Colonial Forastiere Funeral Home, 985 Main St., Agawam on Wednesday, September 6th from 4 to 7 pm. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 7th at 10 am at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Agawam. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Helaine's name to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association; or in her memory, perform a kind act or make something a little more beautiful than it was before you got there.
