Giuseppe R. “Joe” Pietroniro, Sr., 84, passed away on October 23, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Springfield, MA on May 17, 1937 to the late Angelo and Alfonsina (Sticca) Pietroniro, he attended local schools and graduated from Springfield Trade School. From 1957 – 1959, Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army.
Joe was employed by the United States Postal Service in Springfield and East Longmeadow for over 30 years, retiring in 1997. In his spare time, he loved spending time with his wife Carmella and his family. He enjoyed playing dominos and wintering in Florida prior to his illness, where he spent time with friends and family. He was also an avid Boston area sports fan, especially the Celtics.
He will fondly be remembered by his family as a social butterfly, who knew everybody and as a jokester that enjoyed making people laugh.
Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by his brother Nicola “Nick” Pietroniro. To cherish his memory, he leaves his loving wife of 60 years, Carmella (Santos); his children Giuseppe Pietroniro, Jr. and his wife Carol of Granville, Dino Pietroniro and Gina Buckley and her husband Michael all of East Longmeadow; his grandchildren Megan, Joey, Natalie, and Dino Pietroniro and Kaitlyn and Michael Buckley; his great grandson Lucas; his brother Antonio Pietroniro and his wife Linda of FL and his sister Mary Maiolo and her husband Jim of Springfield.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Joe’s caregiver Martha and nurse Marylou for their compassionate care.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, October 28, 2021 from 4 – 7 PM at Forastiere Smith Funeral & Cremation, 220 North Main Street, East Longmeadow. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 29, 2021 beginning at 10:15 AM at the funeral home followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM at St. Michael’s Parish, Maple Street, East Longmeadow. Committal services will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Tinkham Road, Springfield.
