Donald C. Hoyer

Donald Carl Hoyer, age 83, of Longmeadow, MA died Friday, June 30, 2017 at his home. He was born in St. Louis, MO son of the late Carl and Evelyn (Haupt) Hoyer. A lifetime area resident, he grew up in the 16 Acres area of Springfield and graduated from Technical High School in Springfield. He earned his Mechanical Engineering degree from Yale University in 1955. He had a 34 year career with the Monsanto Chemical Co. at the Indian Orchard Plant and worked at their facilities in the U.S, Belgium, Japan, and Brazil. He was a bread baker and ice cream maker extraordinaire, neighbor beyond measure, lifetime learner, and loved friend. A former member of First Church of Longmeadow, he served on several boards, including as technical leader of the Open Arms Project that provided accessibility to the building and part of its restoration. His volunteering included Open Pantry, Council on Aging, tutoring through the Literacy Network and Youth Build, and delivering for Meals on Wheels. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Yale Science and Engineering Association. He leaves his wife of 54 years, Claire, a son Neal (Mary) of Michigan, a daughter Carol (Micah) of Maryland, grandchildren Tyler, Camille, Eleri, and Collin, a great granddaughter Phoebe, his brother Richard (Judy) of Massachusetts, nieces, nephews, and countless friends and dear family, including lifetime friends and college roommates Neal, Barry and Jim. Memorial donations may be made to Open Pantry of Springfield, Habitat for Humanity, or any other charity of the donor’s choice. Funeral arrangements are private, a celebration of his life for family and friends at a later date.
