Rev Charles Frank Gonet

Rev. Fr. Charles Frank Gonet, 88, entered into eternal rest on Monday, June 10, 2019. Born in Chicopee, son of the late John T. and Pauline (Wojnar) Gonet, he was a 1948 graduate of Agawam High School and then attended the University of Massachusetts. Father’s home parish was Sacred Heart Church in Feeding Hills. From the University of Massachusetts he then transferred to the Stigmatine Fathers for two years and did a one year novitiate with the Stigmatine Fathers in Springfield. Father Gonet then studied philosophy for two years and then did four years of theology studies both at the Angelicum University in Rome, Italy. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 31, 1958 at the Arch Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome, Italy by Cardinal Luigi Tratti. He taught for two years at the Elm Bank Seminary in Wellesley. Father’s first assignment was at Sacred Heart Church in Timmons, Ontario, Canada, with subsequent assignments at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Pittsfield, St. Francis Church in Lynn, St. Thomas The Apostle Church in West Springfield, MA, St. Mary Church in Longmeadow, Our Lady of Hope in Springfield and retired after twenty years as the pastor at St. Catherine of Sienna Church in Springfield. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 4044 Chicopee Council, the Italian Cultural Club and was on the John L. Schinelly Trust Fund Board of Directors. Father is survived by two brothers Lewis J. Gonet and his wife, Kathryn and William T. Gonet both of Feeding Hills; four nephews William P. Gonet of Westfield, John C. Gonet of Southwick, Thomas G. Gonet and Roger L. Gonet both of Agawam; six grandnieces; five grandnephews; and 1 great-grandniece. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister-in-law Gail Gonet. Father Gonet’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of the Marian Center and the Diocese of Springfield for the loving care displayed over the years. Calling hours for Father Gonet will be held from 3-8PM on Friday, June 14, 2019 at Sacred Heart Church, 1065 Springfield St., Feeding Hills, MA with a Mass of Christ the High Priest ceremony beginning at 7:30PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30AM on Saturday, June 15th at Sacred Heart Church, with interment following in Springfield Street Cemetery, both in Feeding Hills. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Fr. Gonet’s name to the Marian Center, 1365 Northampton St., Holyoke, MA 01040; St. Catherine of Siena Church, 1023 Parker St., Springfield, MA 01129; or Sacred Heart Church, 1061 Springfield St., Feeding Hills, MA 01030.
