HOLYOKE – Catherine H. Monahan, 102, of Daybrook Village Senior Living (formerly Loomis House), Holyoke, MA died Saturday, 2/8/2020. Catherine (Kay) was born on Valentine’s Day February 14,1917 in Wethersfield, CT and attended local schools there.. Her first job was at G. Fox Company in Hartford, CT where she met William Monahan; they were married May 8, 1939 and lived in Rochester, NY for a few years and then spent many decades in Agawam, MA. Kay was a loving and generous woman. She was active in her church and community. She was a long time employee at the Agawam/Ryan’s Pharmacy on Main Street.
She loved to garden and worked with her flowers into her 90’s. She also enjoyed knitting, painting, crocheting and playing harmonica which she first learned after moving to Daybrook. She was happiest when surrounded by her family, planting her beautiful flowers or singing hymns in church. Catherine was predeceased by her husband,William F. Monahan; parents, John Mener and Margaret (Najduch) Mener, both from Austria. her two sisters, Helen Raczewski and Carol Gorman; and her brother Edward Mener also predeceased her.
She leaves two sons, Michael and his wife Linda of Westfield, and James and his wife Susan of Holyoke. She leaves two grandchildren Jenifer Werner and her husband Joseph and their two daughters Elizabeth and Emily Werner and Alyson Maldonado and her husband Elias.
Calling hours will be Thursday Feb. 13,2020 9:00-10:00 AM at Colonial Forastiere Funeral Home, 985 Main Street, Agawam, MA. followed by a 10:00 AM service.
Burial will take place at the Veteran’s Cemetery Chapel, 1390 Main Street, Agawam following the service.
The Monahan family would like to thank the Daybrook Village staff for their Outstanding support and assistance in making Catherine’s life safe and enjoyable in her 17+ year stay there.
