Obituary

HAMDEN, CT – Augusta Sule Mfuko, age 63, entered into eternal rest on June 30th, 2018. Born in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, on December 8th, 1954, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Makoba. She was a resident of Amherst, MA for over thirty years, and prior to that, a resident of Springfield, MA, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Augusta graduated from American International College in Springfield, MA with a Bachelor's degree in Human Services in 1992, and a Master's Degree in Finance in 1998. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Multicultural Education from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (UMASS). While pursuing her education at UMASS-Amherst, she worked at the W.E.B. Du Bois Library, for many years. She was also the former President of the African Graduates' And Scholars' Association (AGASA), and a Treasurer for the Graduate Student Senate (GSS) for two years. Augusta became a United States Citizen on November 8th, 2006. Augusta was a devoted member of Bethany Assembly of God, in Agawam, MA. She loved teaching Sunday School and Bible Summer Camp, and sharing the Gospel of Christ with her students. She believed that it was important for the children to learn about the God who loves them, from an early age, and she was a dedicated teacher and mentor to many. She counted it all joy to serve, in any and every capacity of ministry, for the calling of Christ. Augusta falls into that heroic category called “Single Mom” and raised her three boys to be upstanding men. She enjoyed spending time with her children and her grand-children, especially during the holidays, when she loved to cook for the family, and teach her grandchildren how to cook Tanzanian cuisine, like chapati. She always shared her testimony with the family, and could not stop talking about the goodness, grace, and faithfulness of God in her life. She even sent children’s Bibles to her youngest grandchildren, from Tanzania, after her two, newest grandsons were born, in 2017. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her brother Theodore Mayige and sister Salome Mbussa. To cherish her memory, Augusta leaves her husband William Mfuko; sons, Norman Mfuko, and his wife Bunmi of Hamden, CT, Fredy Mfuko and his wife Ashani of Monroe, NY, and Walter Mfuko, and his wife Jordan Benton of Wethersfield, CT; grandchildren Malaika, Micah, Michael, Mary, Zuri, Dalila, Enzi, and Malachi; brother, Dr. William Kudoja of Tanzania, and sister Noela Bategeki of Tanzania. Family and friends are invited to gather on Saturday, July 7th, 2018, from 8 - 9 AM at the Bethany Assembly of God, 580 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01002 with a service at 9 AM. Burial will follow at South Amherst Cemetery, between Middle St. and South East St., South Amherst, MA 01002. Repass will be from 12:30-2:30 PM at Commonwealth Honors College Event Hall (across from the Mullin Center), 157 Commonwealth Avenue, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Amherst, MA 01003.
