Stephen G. Smith

October 10, 1960 ~ September 5, 2017 (age 56) 56 Years Old

Stephen G. Smith, 56, of Longmeadow, MA passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 05, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Springfield, MA on October 10, 1960, he was the son of the late George and Ruth (Learned) Smith. Steve attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, majoring in Hotel and Restaurant Management, and then worked in the restaurant industry for many years. He was a true outdoorsman and nature enthusiast, finding joy on the water fishing and canoeing, and in the woods hiking and camping. While at UMass, he discovered his passion for Ultimate Frisbee with long friendships formed in playing, coaching, travel and competition. “Smitty”, as he came to be known by his teammates, later delighted watching his son, Dylan, sharing that same passion for the game in high school and college play. Always a sports enthusiast, Stephen was an avid fan of the Red Sox and Patriots, and never passed on every season of Fantasy Football. Stephen loved reading, particularly thrillers, and had a wide variety of interests and hobbies, but found his greatest joy in the love and company of his family. Stephen was a kind and humble man with a great wit and smile. He will be greatly missed and remembered by all who knew him. He leaves his two children, Marissa Lee Smith of Syracuse, NY, and Dylan Joseph Smith of Philadelphia, PA; his brother, James R. Smith of Brooklyn, NY; and two sisters, Joanne Marie Stevens and her husband Richard of Granby, CT, and Laurie Ellen Morelli and her husband Gary of East Hampstead, NH; his former wife, Patrice Smith; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Connecticut River Conservancy at www.ctriver.org.
