Joycee, Kevin, and Bretter; I am deeply sorry about the loss of Ralphy..

Nearly 47 years ago (and for some years after that) many summer nights were spent in the Coughlin basement engaging in rugged, non-stop competition at the ping-pong table. Ralphy and Joycee always opened their home to us. More often than not, they were long retired for the night when our group played on and on.

The end of Franklin Street was like a second home - The Coughlin's, down the street to Sonny and Julie's with Dean, Cora's for a haircut, Kitty's to watch the Bruins, Donny Rheaults gang, and across Mill street to Johnny Merc's and more ping-pong wars.

Against the Coughlins and the Mercs, only the strong survived.

When growing up, there are people you remember as kind and gentle souls and Ralphy is and always will be on my list.

Over the years whenever we crossed paths, he would burst out in that Ralphy smile when calling him "Ralphy." He remembered. So did Joycee. We would share a story of two of a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away of old Coughlin World, often involving the exploits of Kevin and Bretter. Both were so proud of their sons.

Ralphy gave me a bit of advice that to this day, has never been forgotten.. "Sar," he said., "Win, lose, or draw, always be gracious."

A difficult thing to do.

But for Ralphy that's just how he is - one of the best of us.

Truly.

R. Sar
