Philip Steiger Jr.

Longmeadow - Philip Chauncey Steiger Jr., 91, died Wednesday at home. Born in Hartford, CT, he was the son of the late Philip Chauncey Steiger and Ellen Creed Steiger, and grandson of the late Albert Steiger, founder of the former department store chain. He was a graduate of the Kingswood-Oxford School and Brown University. He served in the U.S. Army in France during World War II. He was Vice President of Merchandising with Steiger’s Department Store and was an active member of the community. He was past President of the Baystate Visiting Nurse Association and Hartford Chamber of Commerce Retail Division. He served on the United Way Community Council and Springfield Youth Service Bureau. He was a member of Century Club, Gladden Club, an adult mentor in the Springfield School System and coached numerous youth sports teams. He was a member of the Longmeadow Country Club, The Blandford Club and First Church of Christ, Longmeadow. Phil’s personal interests included opera, symphony, travel, golf, tennis, skiing and bridge. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed tailgate grilling before Brown University football games. He leaves his wife of 14 years, Marjorie Pettersen Steiger; a daughter, Jane I. Steiger; three sons, Philip C. Steiger III, Lionel L. Steiger, Allen C. Steiger; a brother, Allen Steiger; and five grandchildren, Philip C. IV, Davin E., Margaret A., Matthew W., and Madison H. He was predeceased by his first wife of 49 years, Margaret L. Steiger; and a brother Mark B. Creed III. A memorial service will be held at First Church of Christ, 763 Longmeadow St., Longmeadow at 11:30AM on Wednesday, July 12th. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either, Baystate VNA & Hospice, c/o Baystate Foundation, 280 Chestnut St., Springfield, MA 01199 or Springfield Symphony Orchestra, 1441 Main St, Springfield, MA 01103.
