Springfield – Joseph D. DeCaro, 93, longtime Springfield resident, passed away peacefully surrounded by the warmth and love of his adoring daughters and family on Sunday December 3, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield. He was born in West Springfield, one of six children to Antonio and Antonetta (Amendola) DeCaro and attended the former Springfield Trade High School. Joe retired from the maintenance department of the Springfield Housing Authority, retiring in 1993 after 19 years of service. Prior to this, Joe was employed for 20 years with the Bannon Tile Co. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Springfield, a former member of the Adriatic Club and member of the Veterans Golf Course Senior Golf League. Joe enjoyed his time spent on the golf course and was known for his positive attitude, wonderful personality and sense of humor, his quotes and riddles and love for life. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 69 years, Anita (Berte) DeCaro of Springfield; his two daughters, Nancy A. Malone and her husband Ernest “Mim” of Agawam and Sandy D. Federico and her husband Carmelo of Springfield. Joe adored his sons-in-law, and always said he could not have handpicked two better choices for his daughters. He also is survived by, his brother Dominic DeCaro and his wife Rita; five grandchildren, Jason and his wife Maggie, Lauren, Paul, Dina and Joe; one great grandson, Nicholas “Nico”; and by several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was pre - deceased by his two brothers, Frank and Louis DeCaro and two sisters, Angelina L’Ecuyer and Catherine Cassotta. Family and friends are invited to meet for calling hours on Wednesday, December 6th from 5-8PM at the Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, 220 North Main St., East Longmeadow. Joe’s funeral ceremony will be held Thursday, December 7th starting at 8:30AM at the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 123 William St., Springfield. Burial will conclude in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Springfield. Memorial donations may be made in Joe’s memory to the “It Happened to Alexa” Foundation, 411 Center St., Lewiston, NY 14092 or to Raymond A. Berte Rehabilitation Fund, C/O Springfield College, 263 Alden St., Springfield, MA 01109-3797.
