Francis Angelo DeVivo

Francis A. DeVivo, 88, of Agawam, beloved husband of Alice (Conable) DeVivo for 63 years, passed away on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Baystate Medical Center. Born in Springfield, MA on April 20, 1929, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Viturale) DeVivo. Francis was a man who centered his life around his family. He was their angel on earth. He was compassionate, loving, and generous, and found great pleasure in helping others. His guidance was always appreciated, and his wisdom was extraordinary. Francis had a strong work ethic and was a man to be admired. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a hearty laugh, and was a captivating storyteller.
Francis grew up in the South End of Springfield where he was known as an accomplished athlete, specifically in basketball and baseball. His athletic skills led him to be recruited by the Red Sox where he playing in the minor league. In 1951 he joined the US Army and served during the Korean War. Upon return, he worked for the City of Springfield as a firefighter, working his way up to Superintendent of Fire Alarm Systems. He was instrumental in bringing the 911 emergency system to Springfield.
As a coach for many years, from Little League to Tri-County, Francis impacted the lives of many young athletes. He was a positive role model who emphasized good sportsmanship. He made baseball fun. He was sensitive and had a deep connection with Saint Francis of Assisi, which was evident by his love of nature and animals.
Francis will be missed by many family and friends. In addition to his wife Alice, he is survived by his two sons, David DeVivo of Longmeadow; Brian DeVivo and his wife, Linda of Chicopee; his daughter Diane Panico and her husband David of St. Simons Island, GA; four grandchildren, Alex and his wife Gabrielle, Ryan, Connor, and Allison; his niece Mary DeVivo; two very special family friends, Antoinette Marra and Karen White; and his dog Shadow. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Vincent and Dominick DeVivo.
The family wishes to express deep gratitude to Doctors Marc Norris, Durane Walker, David Ballan for their compassion and exemplary medical care. Additionally, the family would like to thank all of the staff at Baystate Medical Center Springfield Building 2nd floor for the kindness and caring support that was given to Francis and his family.
